(The current Wordsworth Classics, for instance, are truly awful.) So below, I’ve dug up some of the most interesting, or at least representative. Sometimes her books get they covers they deserve-and sometimes they don’t. Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, A Room of One’s Own, etc., but even the deep backlist. Woolf’s writing has been essential reading for so long that there have been countless editions and reprints, redesigns and rebrandings, of all of her books-and not just the most famous ones, Mrs. I’d wager that, if you’re reading this space, you knew that already. It almost seems silly to write that her books are wonderful, or world-changing-but they are. Virginia Woolf was born 136 years ago today. 5/13/2023 0 Comments The wisdom of niccolo machiavelliThis meant Machiavelli was destined to be close to power, but never to wield it in his own name. His father was well established within Florence’s aristocratic elite, but, crucially, came from an illegitimate branch of the ruling dynasty. But, for all his achievements, Machiavelli himself was most proud of his time as a soldier. Machiavelli was many things: a scholar and writer, a spin doctor for the government of his city-state of Florence, a civil servant and diplomat, and, later, a political prisoner denounced as a traitor. “Men rise from one ambition to another first they seek to secure themselves against attack, then they attack others.” Profession: Politician, diplomat, and writerĭeath: 21 June 1527 Iain King examines the relationship between war and thought in the writings of Niccolò Machiavelli. 5/13/2023 0 Comments Grishaverse book 3To win this fight, she must seize a legend's power - but claiming the firebird may be her ruin. Tom Conti really stole the show with his understated performance. Even though I was forewarned about the dark tone of the film I still felt shocked by some of the of the scenes. From the opening crane shot, to Noddy Holder being pad locked inside a coffin I was really enjoying myself. I could not imagine a compelling story being made around Slade but when I sat down to watch it the other night I was very suprised indeed. Slade In Flame is a film I have been keen on seeing since I read about it in 'It's Only A Movie' but I thought it sounded more like a guilty pleasure like 'Howard The Duck' or something like that. The first two I had seen before and was not too keen on revisiting them although I do like Breathless. This is the first of the Film Club that I have took part in. In the process, King refashions old stories about historical events and figures, takes a sideways look at film and pop culture, relates his own complex experiences with activism, and articulates a deep and revolutionary understanding of the cumulative effects of ever-shifting laws and treaties on Native peoples and lands. Rich with dark and light, pain and magic, The Inconvenient Indian distills the insights gleaned from Thomas King’s critical and personal meditation on what it means to be “Indian” in North America, weaving the curiously circular tale of the relationship between non-Natives and Natives in the centuries since the two first encountered each other. For those who don’t wish to understand, it is even more so.”-Joseph Boyden For those who wish to better understand Native peoples, it is a must-read. “Fascinating, often hilarious, always devastatingly truthful, The Inconvenient Indian is destined to become a classic of historical narrative. 5/13/2023 0 Comments Book lovers emilyHello Girls with Brittany Cavallaro (2019) ISBN 0062803425.When the Sky Fell on Splendor (2019) ISBN 0451480716.The Love That Split the World (2016) ISBN 1595148515. This story isn't even really about Peter or being blind, it is about children and how much power they really have. He is actually saying that there is good in being blind. Auxier is not being discriminatory by saying blind people have hightened senses. I am sad to see how many people saw this as discriminatory or horrific. He also apparently believes that blind children would not read this book, as he addresses his audience as "sighted people like you and I." Really, Jonathan Auxier? That’s very discriminatory of you. After Peter's eyes get gouged out by birds on the first page, Peter ceases being a human and is solely Blindness in the form of a boy. Sadly, the author only wanted to use Peter's blindness as a plot device. And to feature a child who is blind as the main character in a fantasy story seemed an awesome prospect. People with physical disabilities are so rarely included in any kind of literature, but especially in books for children. Do you want your child to learn outdated stereotypes about blind people? Then this is the book for you! Did you know blind people have special powers the rest of us can only dream of? Like being able to smell what is in a locked chest? Or that blind people feel a person's face to figure out what they look like? Ah, but we still must pity them, even if they are our main character, because blind people can’t figure out that much - they can’t see! I tried to find the good in the book. This work has been published from a recorded audio book narrative as told by K. The data revolution was taking hold and the old ways would no longer keep them in power or safe.
